Durante i nove giorni del Vegetarian Festival di Phuket mi ritrovo immerso in un clima che alterna devozione e sospensione. Le strade all’alba odorano di incenso; ogni momento è scandito da un’azione ben precisa. I Mah Song, o medium, dopo essersi purificati tramite una dieta vegetariana e un’astinenza dai piaceri, si consegnano al tempio dove gli dèi prendono possesso del corpo per permettere loro di “sopportare” ciò che vivranno sulla loro pelle. Arriva l’atto della perforazione: sognano ciò che dovranno “portare” con la sola forza di volontà, circondati da un’aura mistica che non li fa emettere gemiti di dolore. La folla si muove a un ritmo oscillante ed è lì che iniziano a prendere forma gli scatti, realizzati con l’urgenza di capire cosa accade quando il corpo diventa un ponte con il divino.

Un atto di fede, non di spettacolo: il Vegetarian Festival 2025
Seguendo le processioni entro in spazi che sembrano esistere appena oltre il visibile. I medium, in stato di trance, attraversano la folla con una concentrazione che non lascia spazio al dubbio: è un atto di fede più che di spettacolo. Non c’è ostentazione, non c’è teatralità. C’è una resistenza silenziosa che il mio sguardo fotografico prova a contenere, pur sapendo di non poterla spiegare del tutto.

La relazione tra umano e divino al Vegetarian Festival
Tra i tamburi e i colpi di petardi lanciati dai fedeli, mi accorgo che ciò che resta davvero non è la violenza del gesto, ma la relazione che lega le persone ai propri dèi: una relazione intima, collettiva e fragile allo stesso tempo. Le immagini cercano questo: il momento in cui il dolore non è più un limite, ma un linguaggio condiviso.

La purezza e il sacrificio al Vegetarian Festival
Alla fine dei nove giorni, mentre i templi si svuotano, resta una sensazione difficile da esprimere. Il festival non concede risposte, ma restituisce una domanda: cosa spinge un’intera comunità a cercare la purezza attraverso il sacrificio del corpo? Le fotografie non pretendono di chiarirlo; provano piuttosto a restare nella soglia, dove la fede diventa visione e lo sguardo si fa ascolto.
